“I feel like noZ has a lot of people shook in the industry. Cause he got such an encyclopedic brain on the hip hop thing he can intimidate certain mainstream writers. Some people who I believe are shook are sasha frere jones and nitsuh abebe. I was shocked to see nitsuh bow at noZ feet in his Tyler album review. As soon as noZ turn on yellow ninja it’s over for rap radar. Just being honest. It’s a miracle Jon carma stll feels safe championing drake with the heat noz put on him. No shots though we need noZ the same way we need armond White who I respect a lot for at least not being a bland consensus dude.”—
-comment on Noz’s best songs of the year post at cocaineblunts
1. Much as I love Armond White in his own way, and much as I was inspired by his hip-hop writing in the 80s, comparing White’s current schticky contrarian persona to Noz is a disservice to Noz.
2. Was this just some trollololing or do people seriously think SFJ/Abebe/Caramanica would relate to their writing or their music or their thoughts that way? I’m sure they respect Mr. Nosnitsky just as much as I do but c’mon son.
Disclaimer just to be safe: nothing contained herein is meant as a shot at my man Brandon Soderberg.
Maybe I’m a bit off the mark here but imo, EAT MY SHORTS’ comment was null and void as soon as he said “shook in the industry”. Not sure if he was referring to the music or rap industry as a whole or saying writers and critics are an industry in and of themselves, but either way doesn’t it kind of go without saying, that there isn’t any one critic that has any industry/professional critic shook? Why you putting eat my shorts on blast j. smooth?
I don’t mean that as disservice to Noz or SFJ or Nitsuh or Caramanica (as if any of those dudes would read this) and from what I’ve gathered from their work I don’t think they intend to be taken in that manner either, and I guess this ties in to J. Smooth’s second point about how writers generally relate to the trading of their ideas, but there’s a big difference between “bowing” (not the word i’d use but you get the idea) to another critic in a piece or conversation, and just sniffing each others farts like some old boys club by dissecting some random dude’s well-meaning but obviously misguided comment on the internet. He’s actively reading well-written rap criticism! No need to call the man out. Head, meet tail.
Long Live Bol.
(Soderberg stopped following me on tumblr a couple weeks ago cause I was kind of an impudent dick, but I still like reading his pieces despite disagreeing with him 50-60% of the time)
I think we disagree on what constitutes “putting somebody on blast,” compared to the nerd-macho combativeness that is standard fare in this sector of the rap internet? Or even what constitutes a dissection. (it was 75 words! i’d be way more obsessive than that if I was trying to go in on somebody)
The comment was similar to stuff I’ve read elsewhere, and made me wonder if “pop critics stay shook of other pop critics” is a commonly held perception. So I jotted down my reaction hoping the maybe 20 people here who’d both read it and get the references might have something to add. I guess I just don’t really see that as putting somebody on the Summer Jam screen?
I was no harsher than the OG commenter’s own tone, and simply gave them enough credit to assume they can handle receiving the bluntness they’re transmitting, if they happen to come by here. Plus I didn’t even say their name or link directly to them, probably only two other people tracked down their name besides you, and maybe ten more now cuz you posted it. Why are YOU putting Eat My Shortz on blast??
You should link to your main blog from your tumblr btw, it’s pretty dope.
