Jay's Other Stuff

Five years ago tonight James Brown died, and on that night right around this time, I felt moved to bring something creative into being, to (in whatever clumsy little way I would) put that energy of creation out into the world in his honor. So I downloaded some random video clip from Youtube and opened up Sony Vegas, to experiment with editing video for the first time. After 5 or ten minutes of tinkering I’d made a decision, right at this moment exactly five years ago, that I was going to start a video blog.

As soon as the thought occurred to me I felt instantly, irrevocably committed to it, despite—or really because of—having never talked into a camera before and being horrified by the prospect. I picked out a name, Ill Doctrine, before that holiday weekend was through.

So thank you James, for that, among so many other things.
