So can we stop talking about how “rape-y” this song sounds now?
This is a great perspective, and it’s a great point that a lot of her lines could be taken as worrying about the day’s oppressive societal norms rather than expressing that she herself doesn’t want to stay.
But I will say my sense of the song having creepy undertones (if you’re inclined to listen with that sort of critical ear, rather than trying to take it in the spirit in which it was intended at the time, which I’m certainly well-versed in as a hip-hopper) doesn’t come so much from that one line, which I never took as literal indication that her drink was spiked.. The main thing that gives it an aftertaste for me is the basic dynamic of most of the song where she is voicing objections and he’s not even really listening or responding to anything she says, just kind of steamrolling over her and changing the subject every time. Though I understand it’s meant to be playful/flirtatious, to my 2011 ears it has a bit of a bullying vibe that makes me more inclined to hear other lines as unwittingly creepy double-entendres.
